Mild Steel (MS) Round Bars are solid cylindrical sections used extensively in machining, forging, and structural reinforcement. Unlike TMT bars, which are often estimated using the D²/162 shortcut, precision round bars for machining require a more classical volume-based approach to ensure accuracy for heavy-duty components.

The weight of a round bar is calculated using the volume of a cylinder multiplied by the density of the steel grade.

While the D²/162 formula is popular for site work, engineers in machining shops often use the more precise D² × 0.006165 to get the weight per meter directly in kilograms.

If you are ordering round bars for machining, you must account for "Skin Removal" or "Over-size" allowance. A bar specified as 100mm might actually be supplied as 102mm to allow for the removal of mill scale during the turning process. This 2% diameter increase can result in a 4% weight increase.
